Subsidized Insurance under American Health Care Reform

With the new health care reform, the majority of American citizens will be required to obtain health insurance. You might be wondering, what about those people who simply cannot afford insurance? In these cases, the government will assist you in obtaining it. It all depends on your type of employment, and your income as it relates to the poverty level.

Those who are unemployed, under employed, self employed and work for people that don’t offer insurance may qualify. Through an exchange, they will be able to shop for insurance policies and different kinds of plans. If you qualify, you will be able to obtain financial aid to purchase the policy. Your income determines how much aid you receive and what type of policy you can obtain. The subsidies are on a sliding scale, and those who make less money will get more financial aid. If you fall below or slightly above the poverty level, you can take advantage of this aid. The cutoff will be an income of three or four times the poverty level. For one person, this is about $44,000 a year. They will still be eligible for aid, but will not get as much aid as a person who is right at poverty level. It is on an income by income basis.

Some Americans who make even less (falling below the poverty level) will be allocated to Medicaid for the health insurance coverage.

The Department of Health and Human Services will decide who gets subsidies and who does not. They will set up a process of appeals as well.
